WHOIS is a protocol that makes it an easy task to see the information a specific domain has been registered with either through a command line or by using special web-based lookup websites. This information includes the names, address and email address of the owner, admin, technical and billing persons as well as the registrar organization the domain has been obtained through, the creation and expiration dates. Apart from a few country-code TLDs that have specific limitations, the WHOIS information of any domain name can be edited freely whenever you want, which is quite necessary considering that according to the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details have to be current and legitimate all of the time. Failure to comply with these policies may lead to losing the ownership of an Internet domain and in some cases a domain name might even be removed from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
